Hello.
I have written about retirement in my previous posts.
The mandatory retirement age of my company is 60, so I will leave from the company at that age.
However, since the age at which pension benefits begin in Japan is 65, and there is no income for the five years following the mandatory retirement, I have to continue working until age 65 if I need to earn money to cover my living expenses during that period.
It means that the real retirement age in Japan is 65.
From this perspective, it is not too much to say that to retire completely at 60 is a kind of early retirement.
So, I think that “FIRA60” is early retirement at (or around) 60.
As I mentioned before, I am pursuing “FIRA60.”
That is, I intend to retire at 60 which is my mandatory retirement age.
There are two reasons why I came to think so.
- After getting married, I found what I want to do with my wife.
- After living in Europe and encountering the way of thinking of the local people, I came to realize that I didn’t have to be bound by what is considered “normal” (common sense) in Japan.
In Japan, most of information on the web or articles in magazines suggest that you should work at least until age of 65 when pension payments begin, or longer if you can.
The rationale behind that idea is as follows.
- It is hard to make ends meet only with your pension and savings. In addition, you have a risk of falling into poverty in old age if you live longer than you expect.
- If you keep working after retirement and continue contributing to the Employees’ Pension Insurance system, your future pension benefits can increase.
- If you can delay the start of your pension benefits at an age older than age 65 by earning employment income, the monthly amount of your future pension benefit will be increased. (deferring pension benefits)
Indeed, these points are true, but there are things you may lose by working for many years in old age.
It’s your “free time.”
The more time you devote to work, the less free time you have for yourself.
It goes without saying that it’s better to have a larger pension in case you live a long life, but nobody knows how long you live.
If you unfortunately die early, there is no point in having the right to receive more pension benefits.
The table below shows data from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare on the life expectancy of Japanese people. (Unit: years old)
| Item | Men | Women | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average Life Expectancy | 81.09 | 87.13 | Abridged Life Table for 2024 |
| Healthy Life Expectancy (Average) | 72.57 | 75.45 | Healthy Life Expectancy Figures for 2022 |
Healthy life expectancy means the period during which people can live their daily lives without being restricted by health issues.
It shows that you should assume it is until around age 70 that you are able to keep your health to do what you want without any major problems.
Furthermore, this age is based on an average one, so you may lose your health or even die earlier than that age.
In this context, working until 65 may lead you to pass away before doing what you want.
I do want that I spend as much time on myself as possible for the rest of my life like the local people whom I saw when I lived in Europe.
The best way to make my hope come true is to retire right now, which is just “FIRE movement.”
However, I am facing a serious hurdle to realize that.
That is a financial issue.
To achieve “FIRE” which will reduce my lifetime earnings, it is required that I secure sufficient funding and/or source of income for covering my living expenses after retirement.
Unfortunately, I don’t have enough earnings or savings to do so.
Nevertheless, I want to set aside at least ten years to do things I want to do by the time I turn 70.
Therefore, the realistic solution for that is to work until 60 and then retire.
In other words, it can be said that “FIRA60” is the ultimate compromise reached by balancing two limited resources: time and money.
This is my reason for pursuing “FIRA60.”
By the way, what on earth do I plan to do after retirement?
I will write about this question some other time.
